Best picture so far...

That was taken from 2.5 million km from the picture' subject, on Monday.
Speeding along at 14 km per second, at closest approach New Horizons will be just 12,500 km from the dwarf planet - sometime right about now.
We should get another pic later in the week, and a slow trickle of data over the next 6 months.

That surely is one MASSIVE impact crater?

Also, the bet has now been settled between which dwarf planet is the biggest; Pluto or Eris - its Pluto!
Eris, the '10th planet' was discovered in 2005, Pluto was then demoted in 2006 from full planet status to that of just a dwarf planet, as it was found the Kuiper belt was full of little icy objects orbiting beyond Neptune.

This animation combines various observations of Pluto over the course of several decades.

Amazing! 8)

PlayStation CPU Powering Probe Travelling Towards Pluto - http://www.gamespot.com/articles/playst ... 0-6428896/

The New Horizons space probe which recently completed a flyby of Pluto and beamed new images of the planet back to Earth is being guided by the same CPU which powered the original PlayStation console. As reported by The Verge, the probe contains a MIPS R3000 CPU, repurposed to "fire thrusters, monitor sensors, and transmit data."

The same CPU was used in the original PlayStation console, which was first released in 1994 and ran at 33.8688MHz. It was implemented by NASA scientists in the New Horizons Space Probe, which was launched in 2006 and has travelled more than three billion miles in its journey.
