England never do things the easy way. Conceding in the 93rd minute and taking the game to extra time and penalties was hard to watch but it made it more exciting and entertaining for the rest of the world watching. It was the first time in 12 years that England have won a knock out game in any tournament including the Euros and it was the first time ever that England have won a penalty shoot out at the World Cup. Colombia would be quite a good team if they stopped all the cheating and playing dirty. They would have maybe won the game if they hadn't conceeded the penalty. Next for England is Sweden on Saturday afternoon in the quarter finals then if we get passed that it would be Russia/Croatia in the semi finals then Uruguay/France/Brazil/Belgium in the final. England haven't got a good record against Sweden but this England side is doing things that haven't been done in years. Whatever happens now we have still got further in this tournament than Germany, Argentina, Spain and Portugal.

This match against Sweden was easier to watch than the Colombia match. It was an easy enough win without many problems and has got us another 2 games to play. This England team are very capable of beating teams tougher than Sweden. We have done better than Brazil in the World Cup for the first time since 1990. If we can finish higher than 4th place then this will be a more successful World Cup than 1990. Next is Croatia in the semi finals on Wednesday and then depending on the result of that game it will be France or Belgium either in the 3rd place game next Saturday or in the final next Sunday.

I thought that England would just manage a win against Croatia but no. We were unlucky not to have been more than 1-0 up by half time and then from the second half Croatia were the better team. England getting this far is more than everyone exptected. I won't be slagging off the players and the manager like has been done a lot in the past after we have gone out of a tournament. This England team can go on and still be one of the best teams in the world. England and Croatia are both in the same group in the new UEFA Nations League which starts later this year and we will be playing them another 2 times this year in October and November. England still have another game on Saturday afternoon against Belgium again in the third place playoff. Both teams should be playing their best players this time and if England win this and get third place it will beat 1990 and be our 2nd most successful World Cup ever. I think France will win the final. Croatia have never beaten France before.

"UEFA Nations League"- is that the same as the European championship?

The UEFA Nations League isn't the European Championship it's a new competition starting in September. England are in League A which is the top league and in a group with Spain and Croatia. One of England, Spain or Croatia will be relegated to League B after all of the group games. All 55 European teams are part of this competition and will be playing against other teams that are about as good as they are so it's more fair and every team will have a chance of winning their games. With this new competition happening it will mean a lot less friendly and pointless matches. It's all a bit complicated but this is everything about it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018%E2%8 ... ons_League

Thanks for the info Austin.

Do I take that the European championship still exists?

England today were beaten by a better team but I thought we should have got at least 1 goal with the amount of chances we had. Finishing this World Cup in 4th out of 32 is much better than any of us would have thought a month ago. If England had won Group G and would have got a different route to the semi finals I don't know if we would still have got this far. I think luck was part of us getting to the semi finals but this team is very good and will get better. England should move into the top 10 of the FIFA World Rankings when they are updated in August. Harry Kane is almost certain to win the Golden Boot as top scorer with 6 goals. Some people are saying that Raheem Sterling should have done better. It's been a long time since he last scored for England. The 4 upcoming games against Spain and Croatia in the UEFA Nations League will be hard but we are good enough to avoid relegation.

A controversial France win in the final but they were the best team in the game. All of the player awards have been won by the top 4 teams including Harry Kane winning the Golden Boot Award. This has been the best and most entertaining World Cup in decades with some big surprises. The next one in 2022 will happen in November and December that year in Qatar with the final happening a week before Christmas which will seem strange.
